Washing A Sports Jersey: Important Dos And Don'ts

Posted on

Whether you play a sport and have an authentic jersey or even have a replica jersey to support your favorite team, the fact remains that you want to care for the jersey properly. And even though jersey materials are quite durable, they still require some special precautions when it comes to keeping them clean and stain-free. Specifically, there are some dos and don'ts you'll want to keep in mind as you prepare to launder an athletic jersey.

DO Wash With Like Colors

It's generally best to wash jerseys explicitly with other wholesale jerseys online. Some washing machines have a "small load' setting that you can use when you do this to avoid wasting water. However, should you decide to wash your jersey with your other laundry, try to keep the jersey in a load with similar colors. For example, don't throw a light blue jersey into the wash with lots of dark colors. This will help to avoid bleeding of dyes and keep your jersey's color genuine.

DON'T Wash With Jeans

In addition to washing jerseys with similar colors, you'll also want to avoid washing them with jeans or anything made of denim. This is especially true of dark-wash denim, which has a tendency to bleed in the wash. The last thing you want is to pull your previously-white sports jersey out of the wash, only to find that it's now tinted a light blue because you washed it with a pair of jeans. Unfortunately, this isn't something that can be undone.

DO Air Dry for Best Results

While some jerseys will read on the laundering tag that they can be tumbled dried on a low heat setting, the best way to dry a sports jersey is to simply hang-dry it. Yes, it'll take a little longer this way, but the results will be worth it because you'll be able to avoid the possibility of the jersey material getting snagged on anything else in the dryer. Furthermore, you can avoid unwanted stretching out or shrinking of the material when you air dry without heat.

DON'T Add Bleach or Softener

Be careful not to add bleach or fabric softener to the wash when you launder your jersey. Even if the jersey is mostly white, bleach can damage any patches, sewn-on numbers/names, or other embellishments on the jersey itself. Furthermore, fabric softener may damage the jersey material and is also unnecessary when you're air-drying anyway.
